New Respect for the Biathlon!

I love the Olympics. I can remember watching them as a young child and being fascinated and amazed. This year I have a new love and respect for the biathlon. I never paid too much attention to it until now. Yes, it can be a bit boring to watch at times but once the athletes get to closer towards the end you really see how much endurance the sport requires. The front runners in the pack are exerting so much towards the end they remind me of Phoebe running. Then when they cross the finish line, around half of them just collapse from exhaustion! Jeff and i just loved watching Vincent Jay, the Frenchie, cross the finish line and then hit the deck! He and the others in the front of the pack all pretty much collapsed immediately. We're having so much Olympic fun this year:)

Another Good Love Story for Valentine's Day

Ohhhh I LOVE a good love story. I had never heard about Shen and Zhao until tonight when they skated in the pairs short program. This married Chinese couple are 31 and 36 years old. They met at ages 13 and 18 when they were paired to skate together. The pair remained friends throughout their career. In 2006 Zhao tore his achilles tendon. After his surgery their relationship evolved into a romance. Remarkably he recovered fully and they made a comeback. Soon after, he proposed to her on the ice. Now after 18 years as a skating pair, this couple have their eyes set on the gold medal. After seeing the story and how these two have sacrificed for their Olympic dream I knew I would be rooting for them. When they took the ice and their song, "Who Wants to Live Forever" began playing I knew I would forever be a fan! Tonight they finished in first position and broke a world record for the most points in the short program. They skated absolutely beautifully and I can't wait to see them in the free skate.

Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010

I watched the opening ceremonies last night with my husband. As my friend Lau pointed out, I usually make him watch the ceremonies with me. In the case of the Winter Olympics though, he is really excited about the hockey so it is the other way around. Last night he gave me the run down of which NHL players are in the games, and which countries they are representing. I'm a hockey fan, but if someone isn't on the LA Kings, or dating a celebrity, I probably don't know his name or who he is. Anyhow, it was a lot of fun. I do have to say my heart goes out to the family of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the 21-year-old Georgian luger who was killed during a practice run yesterday. I spoke to my mom about it this morning and she had heard about the death but didn't know the cause. I told her it was during luging and she didn't know what that was so I tried my best to explain the sport in words. I did say it is one of the most dangerous sports in the world. She said she doesn't understand why people do things that are so dangerous but that at least he died doing something he was very passionate about and loved very much. She did feel very bad for his family. Then she went on to tell me about how frightened she used to be when I was in my teens and early twenties and I used to be an avid snowboarder. I don't think one can really compare the dangers of luging to snowboarding! But I get it, she's my mom. Maybe I'll feel differently about it one day when I have kids. So echoing my mom's sentiments, again my thoughts are with his family but at least he died doing something he loved.
